PAL: Playstation 3 Currently Has Over 1200 Compatible PS2 Titles

Speaking at lasts nights threespeech Playstation 3 event in London, Phil Harrison gave onlookers a run though of the Home demo and what they're currently tweaking, along with some more info regarding the PAL/Euro launch.

Here's a quick rundown:
  • The Playstation Home team are working to allow people meeting in Home to launch directly into a game.
  • Phil said Sony are looking at ways for people to sell items to one another, however they do not want to become a bank and take on the responsibility and regulations that entails.
  • There is a long-term plan to allow people outside a cinema/movie theatre in home, to 'go in' and download the film to their PS3.
  • Possibly some aspects of Playstation Home will be accessible via the PSP, obviously limited by its hardware.
  • Phil did confirm that the PAL/Euro version of the Playstation 3 currently has over 1200 compatible PS2 titles, with more to be added to the list by the time the console launches. This will be via a necessary firmware upgrade to 1.6 (the consoles were shipped over 4 weeks ago.)
  • The Sony PR man said that a new HD camera and mic. with spatial awareness will be coming later in the year. Also downloaded PS1 games playable on the PS3 will happen- but later this year.
  • Remote Play from Wireless hotspots will be included in 1.6.

There are around 9,000 titles in the PS2 library worldwide... the PAL PS3 will only support about 1/9 of that... I hope they can add more compatibility to the system soon...

I saw another recent article about Euro BC. Apparently only one of the top 12 PAL games work. I don't know how they got the list, but it's rather unfortunate that those great games won't be supported until or if Sony gets to it.

The beauty of emulating games in software means that Sony can add further support for PS2 games through future firmware updates. I was pretty angry when I first found out about the lack of emotion chip in PS3. Now though I'm not all that bothered because I'm not buying a PS3 to play PS2 games, I'm buying it to play cutting edge PS3 games.

I prefer emulation since rather than relying on the old hardware, the more powerful PS3 hardware can improve the visuals and framerate of the older games. Like how the PS2 could speed up PSone loading and blur the textures a bit. The problem is that Sony would really need to work on emulation for it to work. Kinda like waiting on Microsoft and Xbox BC... it's great when it works, but sometimes it's still buggy.
