Rumour: Grand Theft Auto IV set in New York?
The latest insider knowledge floating round regarding GTA:IV is that New York City is to be the planned setting for the RockStar title.
The rumour apparently came from someone involved in the music soundtrack of the game, that seemed to be going for a NYC feel. With the official trailer unveiling a matter of weeks away ( March 29th ) it seems that RockStars hype machine is beginning to get into gear.
Watch for the media onslaught if NYC is in fact chosen for the games stomping ground...

NYC, huh?
I thought that Liberty City was supposed to be a representation of New York?
So, they are saying that this game will actually be based on/in the real NYC? Real representations of building etc?
If so, then this game will be huge!
Well, thats the power of the 360 and PS3 I suppose!

If this is actually set in NYC that would be awesome!! Hopefully they make this one really good because I have been getting bored of GTA. I beat GTA3, Vice City, and San Andreas but they were all pretty much the same, SA had a few new things. I still plan to purchase it though.

That's what I was thinking. I hope it's not going to be NYC or Liberty City. They really ought to go with something new and original so they can focus on the gaming aspect, rather than trying to faithfully recreate a city. It was one of the pitfalls of the Getaway when the developers made London rather difficult to navigate through rather than focusing on gameplay freedom.

I think it may raise some issues over the inclusion of the WTC... oh and maybe the Cessna from San Andreas

I don't think the WTC is going to matter. Spider-Man has been using New York for three games. Spidey3 is going to be hot so it's best if Rockstar leaves NYC alone.

Yes, but Spiderman tells the story of a superhero, who has the ability to fight crime and saves people's lives. versus GTA, which tells the story of an anti-hero, who has the ability to commit crime and destroy everything in sight. Trust me, there will be major controversies and law suits if Rockstar decides to use NYC. Just look at the filming of Sorpranos in New Jersey. Besides, Rockstar already gets into enough hot water for each GTA title they release, I don't think they would want to risk getting into more trouble by using a non-fictional city. Just my 2 cents...

Rockstar already has the Warriors set in NYC so it really shouldn't matter. There are plenty of other games and movies that depict the streets of NYC in a darker side.

I hear that where ever it happens to be it will be a whole state not just a city. I dont think it will be in NYC, it would be cool but as others have pointed out Rock * has had Warriors se in NYC. Also I hear they are taking GTA in an entire new direction...DOnt know for sure what it is but cant wait untill a few more weeks for info on the character, city/state, and everything else!!!!

The Warriors HAD to be set in NYC since it was based on the movie of the same name. It would hardly have had the same imparct if Warriors had been set in the fictional Liberty City.
By steering clear of real-life locations in games like GTA, Rockstar will avoid any potential lawsuits.
I also agree with earlier posts. GTA is getting very old these days, the gameplay is now very dated. GTA III was good and nothing much had changed with the arrival of Vice City. I found San Andreas to be the best but the series is now definitely showing its age. GTA IV will have to be something truly special to reignite my interest in this ageing series.

The point is, there wasn't any controversy from New Yorkers about a Rockstar game representing the city in a bad way so it shouldn't matter if the game is set in a real location. The only problem with be game implementation to keep things fun.
