How to connect the PS3 to the Internet?

I just got Time Warner Road Runner and I was wondering how to connect the playstation 3 to my modem without a router. I tried disconnecting my computer from the modem and then connecting my ps3's ethernet cord. That didn't work too well. Does anybody have any ideas? Or am I going to have to fork out the money for a router?]

Your ISP is using MAC address filtering on your connection. In this case, your easiest option is to get a router, spoof your computer's MAC address on it and then distribute the connection that way.

If you have two network cards on your computer (or if you are willing to buy another network card and install it), assuming you are running on Windows 2000 Professional and above, you can also configure your computer as a router by enabling the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the modem connection and sharing it with your other ethernet port, once you have enabled the ICS service, you can connect the PS3's network jack and the computer's second network card with a crossover cable, and you should get Internet that way... However, the catch is, you have to leave your computer on in order for the connection to stay alive. For full instructions on how to do this, please check out my post here: http://www.ps3chat.com/playstation-3...ion-error.html

That's simple enough. I guess I'll get a router. Do you have any idea on what kind would be best? I'll probably go with a wired router, seeing has how wireless routers seem to be kind of on the expensive side. Thank you for your help.

There are plenty of cheap routers out there, I personally like Cisco Linksys and Belkin... You should be able to find the ethernet (wired) routers for less than $50. Try http://www.mwave.com or http://www.newegg.com. They have good stuff for cheap.

Well... it really depends on the Internet Service Provider. Some of the ISPs use a technique called MAC address filtering to limit the machines connected to their cable/dsl modems. This technique leases a valid IP address only to a machine with a specific MAC address, and since each networkable electronic device have its own unique MAC address, this approach is quite effective against the general consumers.

In this case, if the consumer wants to connect another device to the cable/dsl modem, he will have to make the other device spoof (or imposter) the MAC address of the computer that is allowed Internet connection. There are various ways to spoof MAC addresses on any computer OS, but there really isn't a way to do it on the PS3 game OS (XMB) yet. So for the PS3 owners, the only option is to route the Internet connection through a device that can spoof MAC addresses (aka. a router or a computer).

Now if the ISP is not using MAC address filtering like my ISP, then the user can simply switch the network cable from one device to the other...

you need a router in order to connect to the ps3 internet. It's much easier, just use the ethernet cable into the router and the ps3 and insert the SSID.

I just got a Linksys Router and it's pretty awesome. Playing online has been awesome so far after I got rid of that NAT 3 problem...

Do you need a separate router for connecting the PS3? My computer, modem, and Wireless Router are all in my room, and I'm planning to move my TV and PS3 there. Could I just get an ethernet cable or some other cable and connect it to my modem or router?
