Hi,
Is it possible to install another OS so i am able to access other websites to download HD content such as quicktime trailers in 1080p format.
Many thanks.

I think it is possible to install multiple Operating Systems onto the HDD possibly by partitioning.
The online PS3 manual has some useful information on this but for some reason this wasn't included in the paper version - not sure why.

Install other system software on the hard disk. For information on types of compatible system software and obtaining the installer, visit Open Platform for PLAYSTATION®3. ... PLAYSTATION®3 allows any desired third-party system software to be installed on it besides its system software provided by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Details will be posted on this site soon.

I know for sure Linux can be installed and is currently being run by a few others I know. In fact a lot of them have created special tools using the Linux platform to allow ripping content from disks and formating the harddrive.
I have yet to dabble, but would be interested in installing XP media centre on an external hard drive perhaps (Awaits the Microsoft flaming to begin)

Lol. What i really want is to be able to watch HD trailers on my HD panel. If there is a way of somehow getting them onto a disc and watching them that way that would be great. I do know that DVD's are set to a maximum resolution of 480, so not to sure if it is possible to do it the optical way.
Thanks anyway

you can and its pretty easy
heres the site i used to get what i needed.
Only thin is you HAVE to have a burn program that can burn ISO cd's and dvd's
if you dont know what that is then jsut dont borther trying
http://ps3.qj.net/PS3-Linux-The-void...g/49/aid/73144
also some help linux commands
if you forget your password when your booting wait till kboot pops up and have "pause" typed and reeady to go then press enter and you stop linux from booting then type "passwd" lets you set new pass
and when you login your user name is "root"
also if you dont get graphics when you login in to "root" then type "init 5"

Thanks for your help there siege.
Would it be possible for you to PM me the list of commands needed to run fedora please.
I am curious to know what screen you have your ps3 hooked up to. I have a 42" lcd 1080i hd panel and was wondering if linux supports this output via HDMI.
Much appreciated

Hi Sprint,
I have successfully installed the loader needed for linux fedora to be installed, and I am about half way through d/ling the 3.2 gig iso for the main O/S.
To install it a usb keyboard and mouse are required, and that is something I wont have until tomorrow morning.
It looks very straight forward, just a bit of common sense needed. At times people will have to enter commands to revert back to the main Game O/S, but if I can do it then im sure others can too
Will let ya know the results at about 2 pm, GMT.
Cheers, wiggo_the_red

Or simply type "boot-game-os" at the prompt.
Gonna go out and buy a usb keyboard and mouse now and will report back.

Dammit,
Got the usb keyboard and mouse, both are recognised via the ps3 desktop, i can even use them permanently. The problem I have now is when i try and install fedora all i get is a repeating error, something along the lines of drivers for the keyboard.
My ps3 is a pal one, so I wonder if the boot loader for linux is ntsc or something along those lines. very strange that the mouse works ok.
Ive tried and tested 2 keyboards, a Samsung one and a cheap octigen one (Never heard of them lol).
Any help would be appreciated.
Wiggo_the_Red
Edit: the error i am getting is as follows:
drivers/usb/input/hid-core.c: input irq status -32 received
that fills the whole screen and I can physically see it scrolling.
