Wireless: 128b strong encryption cannot obtain IP address via DHCP

I have no problem with a wired connection getting out to the Internet. I use automatic settings with DHCP. I am running version 1.6 as my initial attempt told me my system software was out of date. I ran the update without issue.

However when, I try to connect with the wireless connection option, I get an error returned, "Cannot obtain an IP address". If I manually define an IP address, I'm also forced to enter a DNS server address. I use the DNS address supplied by my ISP which is found on my router's (SMC G) web page. In this case, I'm able to obtain an IP address, but cannot access the internet because of a DNS error. By rights, I should not have to enter a DNS address, but when entering in info manually, it forces me to enter a DNS address, otherwise I cannot move on.

I do have strong encryption turned on (128bit 13 character passphrase). I have two other wireless devices hooked up. The first being a desktop PC and the other a Linksys Game adapter (wireless bridge). No problems with either of these. The game adapter was hooked up the same day.

Sent a note off to Sony, but don't expect much help if their user manuals are any indication.

eh? All I do is search for the network, enter the WEP key and bingo.

What kind of encryption protocol are you using, WEP, WPA-PSK, RADIUS Server? Do you have an accesspoint attached to your router or do you have a WiFi router? Please define your network schematics...

PS3 128b WEP encryption

I have an SMC 802.11g router with WEP-128 turned on and DHCP. PS3 only allows a 5 or 13 character pass phrase to be entered. I have chosen a 13 character pass phrase. PS3 accepts it okay, but displays only 8 '*' when the WEP pass phrase is displayed on the status screens. I have chosen the 'easy' route as well as the manual route, with the same result.

More importantly, when I turn off WEP at the router and re-configure the connection at the PS3, the connection is made immediately.

With WEP turned on, I have re-typed the WEP key many times with the same result (unable to obtain IP address).

I'm not sure if there is any correlation between the number of '*' shown and the number of characters used for the pass phrase in this case 13. Is it perhaps only accepting 8 out of the 13. It does not make sense seeing as you get an error if you enter anything other than 5 or 13 characters in length.

I would just use WPA-AES and not broadcast your SSID if you want a secure network. I never liked WEP much /shrug.

Does it give any confirmation for the key you entered? or does it only attempt to obtain the IP address after the key is entered and then fail. I have never purposely entered an incorrect p-word so I’m unaware what if any error message comes up.

Manually enter the settings for the network and make sure that the WEP encryption method is the same between the router and PS3. It's obvious but it's all that comes to mind.

It’s odd that the key appears shorter; when you enter the key it should show the exact amount of characters you have entered afterwards its fine if it shows up as less.

hey, i think i may have a similar problem to the op. my wireless connection to the internet has so far worked perfectly until yesterday when i was unable to sign on to the network. when doing an internet connection test the ps3 failed to obtain the IP address. i then successfully entered it manually after it succeeded in the next test, but then it came up with a DNS error. i then entered my DNS server, but it asks for two of them. my network connection details on my computer only gives me one DNS server? what do i do?

any help would be greatly appreciated cause i really am starting to miss playing online Resistance

I had a similar problem, but fixed it (until the 1.7 update - see my other post for issues I have now!) by changing the encryption to WPA-PSK. I never actually got it working with WEP

Hye govey, your ISP's DNS Server should be the first one followed by the second one being your router or whatever's connect to the net...howver this is subject to the setup you have post the setup particulars and i'll try to help (i.e. Internet connection type, Network setup router, set top box, modem, etc..etc..etc...)

Alex
