Random wireless connection problems after 1.7 update

Anyone downloaded the 1.7 update and now getting random wireless connection issues?

My wireless router works perfectly with my laptop (hence this post ), and it's all set up fine as I can sometimes get online with the PS3 at times (I downloaded the 1.7 update for example) but it seems to be random as to whether it wants to connect or not. It always realises that the router is there (correctly picking out the SSID and encryption type) but then doesn't connect.

So I switch it off and do something else, then come back, switch it on and it seems to be 50/50 as to whether it will connect.

Anyone has the same problem? I've had a good dig around the FAQ and such, the router seems fine and I'm now at a bit of a loss.

Hmm

After many experiments it seems I can't pin down the exact sequence of events that trigger the problem. Sometimes it happens after the PS3 has been turned off at the back and then switched on and sometimes not, sometimes after it was just on standby and sometimes not. Also doesn't seem to be a relationship with whether my laptop is connected or not, or whether I have rebooted the wireless router.

The only way that seems to work consistently to fix it at the moment is that after switching it on and the connection doesn't work, I disable the network connection in the menu, then after 20 seconds re-enable it and then it seems to connect fine.

I've had a dig around on the web and I don't seem to be the only person with this problem - I'm not a computer beginner and understand how to set everything up properly. The PS3 always detects the wireless router (even if it doesn't connect properly) with at least 80% signal (it's only one room away) and once it is actually connected the signal doesn't then drop which leads me to believe it's probably not a hardware issue and likely to be an issue with the PS3 software. Interesting that I had no problems before the 1.6 and 1.7 update.

For interest I'm using a 3COM wireless router / modem with MAC address filtering and WPA turned on.

Anyone any other thoughts

Would prefer to leave encryption on for when I use the PC, but will at least try it to see if it improves

Right, more info

I thought that it might be something to do with connecting more than one device to the router at the same time so last night I made sure that I didn't have my PC or laptop on at all and tried to connect. I had a few issues but what usually seemed to fix it was to disable the wireless, wait for a min or so and then enable it again. It usually connected after that.

I also found that disabling uPnP seemed to make the connection more reliable.

I'm coming to the conclusion that it's the router rather than the software - it's pretty cheap and needs power cycling every now and again when using my PC or laptop

Maybe I'll invest in a better router at some point - currently have a 3COM 3CRWE754G72 OfficeConnect ADSL Wireless Router

Go to my thread I recently made specifically for "Wireless" connection help. If that doesn't help you, then I suppose I'm a failure.
