Media Servers...How does it work?
I have no idea how the media server function works on the PS3. If you can make your PC a media server can someone please explain how? Is another device besides a PC and a router needed?

You need Windows Vista, or windows media player 11.
In media player go to, Tools, Options, then click library tab, then configure sharing, check the share my media box. When done a box will appear with the list of devics to share to click unknown device then ok.

1 - Click Start > Run
2 - Type "services.msc" without the quotes
3 - Scroll down to "SSDP Discovery Service" and double click it.
4 - Where the drop down box in the middle of the property page is, under the heading of "Startup Type", change the setting to "Automatic" then click apply. After this, the start button should become enabled so click on it to run the service.
5 - Close the window then back on the services window, go down to "Universal Plug and Play Device Host" and double click it again.
6 - Repeat step 4 for this service.
7 - Close the window again, then return to the services list and scroll further down to "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" and double click this service.
8 - Repeat step four again for this service.
9 - Close the window and then close the list of services on screen.
Now try to re-activate the media sharing in WMP11, hopefully this should have done the trick. If not, make sure you have run through all the steps correctly and in the right order. Also note that this doesn't have to be done again unless the problem re-occurs, the services you turn on here are now set to load every time on booting up your computer.

I use a Macbook Pro and it works, but i dont use it cos its so slow, and the buffereing is like 10seconds which gets frustrating.
I use TwonkyMedia which works...
i also tried Eyeconnect, it comes up on the PS3 but wen i select a song it comes up with a network error...

Download from http://www.twonkyvision.com/
follow all the setup form the installer...
if u hav ur firewall on u will need to make exceptions...
1. System preferences -> Sharing
2. Click on the Firewall tab
3. Click 'New'
4. Change the port name to 'Other'
5. the TCP Port Number(s) for all of them should be '9000'
6. the UDP Port Number(s) should be '1900' / '1030' / '9080' (only one of these per exception so u need to go to point 3. again
After you have done this search for a media server onyour PS3,
the problem with Twonky is that it is just a trial. i tried using media tomb which is free, but it didnt work.

Windows users should use TVersity, its easy to set it up and you can get it to convert on the fly aswell so the chances are that any video file you want to play on your ps3 will be accepted.
See for yourselves click here.

Hi folks, I'm new so bare with me a little. I have a PS3 a laptop with vista and a media server and a XP Pro PC on my home network. With media server enabled on the PS3 everytime it logs on the network it Boots the whole network and we all lose our connections. With it disabled it works fine and nobody gets booted. I use a wireless connection to my routor on the PS3. everyone else is wireless to but the media server is hard wired. Any ideas why this happens ? thanks
