I recently purchased a PS3 and have started to try to explore transferring media from my laptop to the console. The PC is running Vista and is connected wirelessly to a Netgear router (provided by Sky - my ISP) and the PS3 is connected via ethernet cable directly to the router. Both the PC and PS3 can connect to the internet and I can ping the IP address assigned to the PS3 from my PC.

After reading a few forum posts, I have followed the steps to enable Media Sharing in Windows Media Player (I have ensured that Media Player is the latest version). However, my PS3 does not appear in the list of devices I can share media with. Only the PC itself appears in there. I have tried disabling the firewall, but this makes no difference.

I am stuck at this point - not too sure what to do. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

yeh i have a similar problem with WMP11 not finding my PS3 or vice versa. I Use Nero media home to transfer my media to my PS3. I find it slow though.
If your PC came with nero it should installed on your PC.
There are free programs from the internet you can use. such as tversity but i haven't had much luck with this however it has been very highly rated by others in this forum

thanks for the advice. i installed the tversity software, but i'm afraid i got even more confused! Any ideas if how to i can fix my problem with m existing set up?

I wish i could help you but i was never able to get Windows Media Player to recognize my PS3 I've tried many fixes from various forums and websites (see below) but got nowhere. My best advice is to keep searching forums or acquire a copy of NERO ultra edition (Version 6/7 onwards I've no experience with previous versions so i don't know if Media-home is included) and use the media home software. Hi new advice as I've just got tversity working (in a matter of sorts)

Open tversity and make sure its running as a server (right click on the icon in the notification tray and click start sharing it should say sharing started or something along those lines or cant start because its already started. go to my network places (or whatever its called in vista i have XP) then find the one called "xyz:TVersity Media Server" double click it, it should open a fairly basic web page with audio, video, picture links etc. look in the address bar and and copy that IP address with http so it should look something like this "http://82.54.2.87:43127"(i made that one up but thats all of it you should need) now copy the bit that looks like that into the PS3s web browser and voila, add to bookmarks for ease of use.

It may ask for a user name and pass word, if it does go back to tversity click settings>general>home network tick any boxs that arnt ticked and enter your own user name and password this should work
feel free if you need any more trouble shooting i remember doing quite a bit of fiddling to get it to work.
Note this bypasses the whole searching for media server thing so you can only download your PCs files to your PS3 HD as far as im aware an not stream them as you would be able to if it had worked properly
