Best method is something like TVersity or Nero MediaShare, Winamp also has a media server included as well.
So, basically, you need to run a server on your main pc and if your ps3 is within the network, be it through a wireless router or wired router or switch, then, your ps3 should see the server and you will be able to view and copy files from your pc, additionally, if you use nero mediashare, you can transcode files on the fly, which means the program will change the format of the files so that the ps3 can play them.
