PS3 Won't Detect Ethernet Cable

My PS3 has suddenly stopped detecting my etehrnet cable. It has been working fine and the ethernet light is still on but now it just says "no ethernet cable connected". My PS3 is set to automatically sign me in to Playstation Network but now when I turn it on it just says "Signing in..." forever and it's not until I cancel it and try and sign in again that it says it won't connect it. I know the obvious answer is my ethernet cable is broken, I've just ordered a new one but I'm not so sure that's the problem as it's fairly new and hasn't had any problems up till now, it was fine the day before as well. I did consider that it might be something to do with the Software so I updated to 2.7 but still no luck.

Any suggestions? Hopefully it'll work with a new ethernet cable but if anyone can suggest anything I can do in the meantime I'd love to hear it...

Are you running though a router? If so is there a light on the router to say the PS3 is connected?

It may sound daft but swap the cable around, IE take the plug that was in the PS3 and plug it in the router and vise versa.

Cables dont normally mess up until they are donkeys years old, well not by themselves, some companies have the same network cables in use for decades.

Hi, i have a similar problem too.
As of the last couple of days my ps3 has been in and out of connection and when it drops out it asks me to connect the ethernet cable (which is in) but then i notice the green light is out. Ill do all the setting things again and it will tell me the connection test failed. ill keep doing it over and over and same thing. then ill turn it off, unplug everything, plug it back in, and some times the green light is back on and it works. Now i havent experience it dropping out as im using it, but if turn the ps3 on again the next day or even a couple of hours later, it will again say i have no ethernet cable attached.

Just to let you know, i have recently changed internet providers and modem/router. Ive really only noticed the problem since then, but i rarely used the internet on the ps3 leading up to the change so i dont know if its been a problem earlier and i just havent noticed it till now.

I know its a whole lot of text right now but if anyone has any ideas, let me know. Im thinking its got something to do with the router and possibly the internet, but my wired computers dont seem to have a problem.. so i would hate to think that my ps3 is having problems.
